The Schuyler Skunk Cannabis Strain

Posted on Leave a comment

A guest post from Lindsey….thanks Lindsey

Virginia hasn’t been a terrible place for me to spend my life in, so far. What makes Virginia such a beautiful state, in my opinion, are the admirable natural and agricultural aspects.

Sativa Cannabis Strain

The scenery is amazing, and the plants that surround my hometown in Central Virginia greatly contribute to the loveliness of the area- especially the cannabis plants with a plethora of different weed strains.

Schuyler (pronounced sky-lurr) is a Virginian town located in Nelson County, which isn’t far from me at all; maybe twenty minutes or so down the highway and farther into the woods. Most people probably don’t know about this town, yet many know about the popular cannabis strain native to this town- Schuyler Skunk. This strain, which has been around for decades, is some seriously killer weed.

Schuyler Skunk became popular sometime in the 80s or 90s, especially to the locals.

Possessing a highly pleasant buzz and an incredibly, uniquely strong aroma, Schuyler Skunk is a sativa strain, with a pretty moderate THC concentration.

Actually, many that have tried it would consider it to be a highly potent cannabis strain.

It became widespread due to its unforgettable, undeniably enjoyable head high, and still remains a super sought-after cannabis strain throughout the country.

Although there are some ideas out there on its origination, for the most part, the beginning of this strain’s existence remains a mystery. The collective theory is that it was derived from a home-bred, experimental local cannabis grow.

Sadly, this strain isn’t nearly as common as it used to be. The popularity and availability of Schuyler Skunk dwindled down in the late 90s, but if you’re lucky enough, and happen to know the right people, then there’s always still a chance to relive the sweet memory of experiencing the distinctive feeling that this strain offers.

The first time that I ever saw this strain being grown, every single weed plant’s stalks grew to a size to where they could only be cut down with an electric pruning saw- this occurred when very, VERY little effort was put into the growth of these plants.

I could only imagine the size that these cannabis plants would’ve reached if the proper love and care had been put forth into their growth. I also recall the duration of its vegetative stage being significantly lengthy.

My old friend would start this strain earlier than most other cannabis strains, yet the Schuyler Skunk marijuana plants would always end up the last ones harvested.

Countless people all over the United States have stated that they want this cannabis strain to make a comeback. Perhaps it will, considering the weed legalization in Virginia that recently took place.

I will hope for the best, and in the meantime, reminisce on the pungent, characteristic strain, Schuyler Skunk, and be reminded by myself of back when 420 was just about every day while smoking this sweet herb.

Is This the Real Santa Marta Colombian Gold? My Journey Hunting for the Phenotype

Posted on 4 Comments

Well lets start at the beginning.

Santa Marta Colombian Gold Cannabis Strain

I grew my first Santa Marta Colombian Gold cannabis plant in 1969. I got the seeds from a kilo of ‘redbud’ that I had procured. Cannabis was generally fully seeded and fully mature in those days. No one here in the USA grew cannabis to speak of…..Certainly none was grown for bud to sell. And no one grew indoors either.

I lived in Southern Oregon at the time at nearly 4500 ft. above sea level. Needless to say, not the latitude one could successfully grow a long season tropical Sativa like plant like the Colombian Gold.

The growing season there was about 31/2 months. The Santa Marta Gold plants I grew got to about 6 ft. tall, and were very bushy, as they were about 6 ft. in diameter as well.

Long Season Santa Marta Colombian Gold Pheno

As fall approached the plants just barely began to flower, then the first frost brought an end to the grow. We didn’t know any better so we smoked the leaves, and basically got a sore throat.

I remember the plants were big, robust, healthy, and impressive. Thin Sativa like leaves, and very slow to flower, just what you would expect from a tropical Sativa.

Fast forward to today….

I have made it my passion to bring back some of those ‘old school’ cannabis strains of yesterday. So the pheno hunt has begun! I have grown Santa Marta seeds several times now, and can seed several distinct pheno-types. Some have asked how….if this is a Landrace Sativa strain…there can be ANY different pheno-types?? Well, what has happened is the Colombia Gold has been crossed….there in Colombia! The actual pure Santa Marta Colombian Gold of days gone by may be gone forever.

Santa Marta Colombian Gold Male

I can however try to isolate a pheno-type that is as close as I can get to the original genetics…..just like the plants I grew so long ago. And I am having some success…..

I found several pheno-types while growing out many of these plants….one has large leaves like an Indica dominate plant, and one is short and stocky. Both of these pheno-types are quick to flower, and are basically almost ready to harvest before my chosen pheno-type has gotten into full flower!

The pheno-type I have chosen is very Sativa dominate, and takes a long time to flower just as it should. These plants are very tall, slender, and have the thinner Sativa like leaves. I think this plant is close to the original.

I am propagating it as we speak. I have just one female, and one male….once their seed is mature I will produce enough to sell on this site. These will be F2’s and I will see if they breed true….if so, I think I will be close, and satisfied I have achieved my goal.

Then I will move on to my next project….Panama Red….

Best Cannabis Strains for Growing Monster Plants

Posted on Leave a comment

Doing an outdoor grow? Want to grow those big monster plants that will give you a huge harvest? Up to 10 lbs?

I don’t blame you, although harvest time can be a bit overwhelming! But, who doesnt love multiple pounds of great cannabis buds from a single plant.

So which of the strains I offer would be good candidates for 10+ lbs of buds?

Here are my picks for the strains that will grow big, given the proper nutes, time, and light. Here is another post I wrote that goes into the details of growing 10 pound monster plants.

So here are my top picks for growing cannabis trees….

Santa Marta Colombian Gold a mostly Sativa plant ( the locals there have added genetics to this landrace strain)from the mountainous regions of Columbia South America

The Force a mostly Indica hybrid strain that shows excellent hybrid vigor, and the ability to get huge.

Santa Marta Colombian Gold/Jedi Glue a F1 hybrid I grew out that should share the ability to grow huge outdoors.

Paul’s Purple Fire I bought these seeds wholesale, but not only can these plants get big, this strain can turn purple in the coolness of fall.

Sugar Haze is a hybrid strain resulting from the cross of a Santa Marta Colombian Gold and Skunkman’s Original Haze. The Sativa influence will make this hybrid slower to flower, and longer to get bigger during the vegetative state.

BadAss BB’s is a cross of The Black and The Big. And like its mother can get BIG! You can also watch some of these plants turn so purple they almost appear black at harvest. Another purple strain that is sure to please.

The Black is a strain that can not only get huge grown out right, but can turn a very dark purple. This is an exotic strain you and your friends are sure to like. The ultimate purple strain of cannabis!

Santa Marta Colombian Gold X Sugar Haze is a F1 cross I grew out for seed. This strain is a mostly Sativa hybrid that growing huge should be no problem.

Hawaiian is a landrace/heirloom strain straight from the islands. It is slow to flower and Sativa dominate. Should work well for growing into a monster plant.

Lebanese is a landrace strain from that area of the world. A long winded strain that should share the ability to grow big given the right conditions.

So there you go. Either Go Big….or go home. LOL

Santa Marta Colombian Gold Cannabis Strain Review

Cannabis Sativa Flower

Santa Marta Colombian Gold is seriously old school marijuana. Colombia Gold is a Sativa landrace cultivar developed years ago in the Santa Marta Mountains of Columbia in South America. As a matter of fact, this strain is closely related to the famous Acapulco Gold.

The Gold cannabis strain is a near pure Sativa with a calming, yet energizing, cerebral high, that will have you coming back for more. Some say it has a skunky taste, while others have said it tastes of lemons or limes.

This strain has been bred, inbred, and cultivated for 100’s of years by the local growers in the Santa Marta Mountains. They have created one of the most stable strains on the market. The strain has been half of many hybrids over the years, just as I hybridized it with Jedi Glue.

It is a big beautiful plant that grows vigorously, with big tight buds that are covered with trichomes. So many trichomes that it comes in at about 19% THC.

Santa Marta Colombian Gold cannabis high produces giggles, chattiness, and improves mood and concentration. The strain is great for treating depression, stress, PTSD, nausea, anxiety, muscle spasms, chronic pain, and even seizures. The high finishes with a mild sedation which can bring on a restful sleep.

How to Grow Autoflowering Cannabis Plants

Advice on Autoflowers

Guest post by Logan, thanks Logan

So you?re probably wondering why grow an Autoflower vs a Photoperiod.

Well, I?m here to shed some light on why learning to grow autos can be rewarding. I really do mean ?Learning?, because there is a learning curve on how to maximize growth and yield.

Lady Bugs on a Cannabis Plant
Lady Bugs on a Cannabis Plant

Firstly the benefits of growing auto-flowering cannabis plants is plain and simple, quick weed in a short space of time, c?mon we?re busy people and we want instant gratification, two to three months to get at least two ounces who can?t live with that?

So one thing you have to remember and it?s the fundamental rule, your autoflower pot plant is on the clock, you don?t have time to spare. I would advise that you grow your auto on at least an 18/6 light schedule, you can do 24 if you desire.

Indoor growing is ideal you can make sure your plant gets the maximum light vs outdoor growing. You would need a good grow light, LED or HPS preferably with a 1000 watt output or equivalent.

There are LED grow lights that only use 100 watts but output 1000 watts so that very economical.

Next, you need a deep pot, 3-5 gallons. Autos roots like to grow downwards so they appreciate the depth. For soil I would recommend any Peat Moss based grow medium with perlite, a 70/30 mix is ideal. Autos like light airy soil so that their roots can grow easily and it?s breathable.

This next rule is I would say the most crucial, plant your germinated seed directly in the pot you plan to grow it, they do not like to be transplanted, if you transplant you may lose at least a week of growth and remember, you?re on the clock.

This one factor can be the difference between having an actual plant or something looking like a mini bonsai cannabis plant.

Now bear in mind even if it is small you will get a yield, a very sad 1-2 grams.

Yes it hilarious to see one of these.

Next, feeding is very important you want these plants to basically grow as if they were on steroids, now don?t overfeed but don?t skimp on the nutes, observe your plant and if it responds with no problems then you?re on the right track.

Don?t overwater, make sure your PH is good, same as growing any cannabis plant.

As for training, low-stress training is best if you so decide, whatever to do, DO NOT top an Auto, you?ll set your plant at least a week back to recover, time which you don?t have.

And lastly enjoy yourself, these Autos are so much fun to grow, once you?ve mastered an auto you feel like you?ve unlocked a life achievement.

Some people give auto flowering cannabis a hard time saying they don?t yield much, lower THC, yadda yadda yadda.

Most likely these people failed at doing everything right and blamed the genetic instead of themselves. Any successful grow belongs to you the grower, it?s not going to be easy but if you follow these simple steps you?ll be on the right path and you can always improve on your technique, but start with a good foundation.

After your first successful grow you?ll be even more motivated to keep pushing the limits of these awesome auto flower strains.

Strains I recommend for beginners are Durban Poison Auto and Sour 60 Auto.

I hope I was able to help and inspire some of you to grow an auto flower cannabis strain or even retry it. Never give up and never surrender. Success sometimes takes practice!

Keep on Growing!

Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid Cannabis For Pain Medication…Mary’s Story

Posted on Leave a comment

A guest post, thanks Mary…

I was a 48-year-old woman living with a life of pain.

Ata Tundra Cannabis Strain
Ata Tundra Cannabis Strain

Medication for my autoimmune disease did a lot of damage to my liver, so I choose to live with pain versus taking pain pills that would continue to harm my liver.

I was very hesitant to try cannabis at first and after researching the positive effects I decided to try it.

Cannabis changed my life. Nothing helped my pain like Cannabis. I highly recommend trying it, not only did it take my pain away, I was able to sleep better, more energy, and a calmer mood.

My life of living in pain is gone.

Trying something new can be a little scary, but fear of cannabis is simply misplaced. Cannabis helps, it does not hurt.

These are 3 main types of Cannabis in many flavors, smell, and taste.

Try the different main types of cannabis until you find your favorite.

Indica: can also be referred too ?in the couch? this term is because Indica puts you into a relaxed and calm state.

Some people say they got scared because they were ? couch-locked? for 20 mins. I find it?s more your body fully relaxes to a point it feels so good you don?t want to move? but you can.

When you first try Indica it will put you to sleepy state fairly quickly. As you get used to the effects you really start to enjoy the pain-free relaxed state you are in.

Sativa: to me is day time cannabis. Not only does it take your pain away, but it can also give you energy and a creative mind.

Cannabis Sativa 1

When you first try Sativa it can make you sleepy, but as you get used to it, you will get enjoy more of the other effects.

For myself, I enjoy this type when I have a job to tackle or to play with my artistic side.

Hybrid: seems like the best of both worlds.

In hybrids, most strains will have either more Indica vs. Sativa or visa versa.

My personal favorite is Indica so when looking at these strains I usually pick an India dominate cannabis strain. For example 60% Indica 40% Sativa.

I really like JustCannabisSeed.com as you explore their web site looking at the different types of cannabis seeds.

They have made the choices easier with a descriptive blurb about each and every strain of seeds they carry.

Growing your own cannabis at first is confusing, but with so many videos to watch it makes it much easier.

The Sativa Cannabis Strain….Characteristics

Guest Post….Thank you Maxime

Sativa, that elusive word. Being from Quebec, Sativa was almost only a concept to us. We were certainly aware that some variety of cannabis gave a less stony high, but were not completely sure of the strains that were almost pure Sativa.

Cannabis Sativa 1
Cannabis Sativa 1

One of the best descriptions of the effect I heard is: it reminds me of the feeling of the first time I smoked some weed. They were talking about the body and mind effects that were unlocked when consuming high Sativa strains like the Jack Herer .

Let’s jump into the last few years where cannabis has become increasingly popular and the demand for high Sativa strain has skyrocketed. The majority of none regular users prefer a Sativa because they feel a boost of joy and motivation compared to a confusing and relaxing couch-lock effect of an Indica. Here are some of the most popular strains of Sativa:

Sour Diesel, Durban Poison, Green Crack, Haze, just to name a few. These strains are all caract?rise by giving the user a unique boost of energy and joy through its duration. Sativa will not leave you tired, will not confuse you and is a perfect choice for daily usage. I wouldn’t recommend using Sativa once it is dark unless you are planning to stay up all night.

Sativa Type Cannabis Plant

Sativa plant grows tall and slim and usually take much longer than Indica to grow their entire cycle. They hold some of the best fragrance cannabis had to offer, from fruity to floral passing by exquisite exotic smells. Buds tend to be taller and less fat than their Indica sisters. It is not recommended to grow Sativa outdoor in the northern hemisphere unless you have an auto version. Sativa autos are perfect for the grower living in a short summer environment , they ensure the plant will meet it full potential with its short growth cycle.

If you haven’t grown a Sativa auto outside in the summer, you have to try em, they give astonishing results that won’t disappoint.
