Just came home from a productive trip up to the property. My two sons met me there and we accomplished a lot in just two days. But What the Bear Wants the Bear Gets!

Cut down all the native trees on the little hill that has my water tank on top. I did this to create a fire break. And will continue on around what I have there to try to protect it from a fire. It is pretty much not ‘if a fire will burn through the area, but when a fire will burn through.’

I want a fire break of several hundred feet in all directions. This break will not remain fallow however, I will be planting many bushes and small trees…all on drip, so they will simply not burn well in a fire. I will keep the burnable underbrush pretty much clear though.

Fire Break

You can see all the trees down above the load of gravel I had delivered, will have a break of about that size in all directions. Hopefully the things I plant will not burn as readily as the pine and oak I am removing.

I am always amazed at the number and diversity of the the creatures to be found in nature, when humans are not depleting their numbers.

Humming birds nest in the area as well, I think I will take up a feeder, and see just how many are around. They love my area as the native flowers are about done blooming, but certainly not the non natives I am introducing. See the humming bird on the Gladiolus flower I have growing there?

I wondered about those flowers providing sustenance for them as the Gladiolus are in full bloom, here is what Google tells me…’In most gladiolus the reward is sugar-rich nectar contained within the floral tube. The reward is provided so that an appropriate visitor will be passively dusted with pollen as it forages.’

And, now to continue the saga of the bird-feeder bear…

I installed a small plywood barrier (which I knew he could pretty easily defeat, but, it did work well to keep squirrels from accessing the bird block. This is just one of many attempts by squirrels.

I knew the bear would try to get the game block I put out for the birds again, so I put a couple cameras on the feeder , and got some good footage of him successfully getting a good meal.

Here he is when he first arrived…

He is sniffing the air, and smelling something he likes, but will he defeat the plywood barrier?

He knows there is a good meal there, and the feeder will support him, so he is determined!

And finally here he is enjoying the fruits of his labors…

I have taken the feeder down, cut off the post, and hung it up in a pine tree from a branch. Will the bear find it, and try to get the game block again? Yes, I am sure he will! I have a couple of cameras on it, and again will share the vids with you of him attempting to get at it. Hopefully we will figure out how to thinking, What the Bear Wants the Bear Gets!

Here are some random images from this visit as well…

Yes, he did. I have cut the feeder off the post, and hung it in a tree. After two weeks I went back, and the block was gone again, thought it was the bear again, but it was not, squirrels had actually hauled the whole thing away one mouthful at a time. I was just up there again installing an outhouse, and I moved the feeder away from the tree farther to keep the squirrels off of it….maybe. I will be doing a write up about that visit here soon.
