List of Names for Cannabis

Hi, our favorite plant cannabis, has been known by many names over the years. Because of its popularity, cannabis has many nicknames and street names.

Cannabis has been used by various cultures for hundreds of years; therefore, there is a seemingly endless list of names for this plant?which vary according to the country, communities, and age groups in which they are used.

There are over 1,200 slang terms related to cannabis?? or marijuana, or hashish, or weed, or pot, or, as some say, broccoli .

And there are hundreds more to describe one?s state of intoxication after ingesting the drugs contained within the plant, according to slang scholar Jonathon Green.

As TIME has reported, five California high-schoolers first coined the term?420?in the 1970s, which likely led to April 20 becoming the day for cannabis intoxication.

This association goes back to the earliest recorded cannabis slang from the 16th century, adopted by those who didn?t want the authorities to know what they were talking about.

But why are there hundreds and hundreds of words for pot? With any slang, as adults or authorities become wise to what one term means, that?s a signal that it?s time for a new one.

And the wide variety of people who partake of cannabis across the globe were bound to come up with even more slang words. Green says he doesn?t see the creativity waning even as U.S.?and others?move to legalize marijuana.

?The terminology doesn?t really emphasize illegality: It is the illegality that created the need for the terminology,? he says. And, Green adds, the creation of such terms is not only ?seen as ?fighting the man,? it is also simply fun.?

Without further ado, here is a list of names for cannabis:
