How to Choose the Best Male Cannabis Plant for Breeding

Selecting a Breeding Male: Key Traits & Characteristics to Look For
When breeding cannabis the female plant is only half of the equation. So how do you choose the best male cannabis plant for breeding?
Lets take a quick look at selecting a breeding male cannabis plant…Here are some key traits and characteristics to look for…
Desirable Characteristics of a Top Breeding Male
Stem Rub & Terpene Output: A pungent, complex aroma released when rubbing the main stem during late veg and early flower. Avoid males with flat, grassy, or faint scent profiles.
Resin & Trichome Production: Visible capitate-stalked trichomes forming on the sepals, pollen clusters, and upper bract leaves. Males that frost up tend to pass high cannabinoid and resin density to female progeny.
Vigor & Root Development: Fast, explosive root establishment and steady, aggressive vegetative growth without showing nutrient sensitivities.
Hollow Stem Structure: A thick, pith-free or hollow stalk structure, traditionally correlated with increased sap flow, vigorous nutrient uptake, and superior resin potential in offspring.
Node Spacing & Growth Habit: Tight-to-moderate internodal spacing with stout, sturdy lateral branching capable of carrying heavy colas without snapping. Avoid overly leggy, spindly males unless specifically hunting pure equatorial sativa traits.
Pollen Cluster Density & Maturation: Heavy, dense clusters of flower sacs that open evenly and shed copious viable pollen. Look for clusters with strong floral structure rather than loose, sparse pods.
Flowering Transition & Timing: A male that transitions into flower cleanly and produces pollen just as females are opening their first receptive stigmas, avoiding premature or excessively delayed flowering.
Hermaphrodite Resistance & Sexual Stability: Total absence of spontaneous female pistils or single-pod bananas under environmental stress, heat fluctuations, or extended light photoperiod shifts.
Stress & Pathogen Resistance: Natural resistance to common pests (spider mites, thrips, aphids) and molds (powdery mildew, botrytis) without showing stress signs or drooping under temperature swings.
Leaf-to-Calyx Ratio: Clean canopy architecture with high bud-to-leaf density, reducing trimming burden in future generations.
Remember your male will supply half the genetic make-up of the resulting offspring. So choosing a great male is paramount to breeding success.
Up at Stony Oasis Farms in my hugelkultur grow this year I was wondering which male I would choose. Once they began showing I realized I had 3 BadAss BB’s in the mix, and who woulda thunk it, they all became males! And all of the have check marks for most of the desirable traits listed above.
So what to do…I did have one favorite…but in the desire for a nice variety of pheno-types, I decided to keep them all! And, they are scattered through the other 12 plants. I have 15 plants in this grow as that is what I am allowed to grow here in WA state…where I have my medical card.
So without farther ado, here are videos of all the males I kept to do the deed….
Lets start with my favorite male…a very Indica dom male…
And, here are the other two, but with a bit more Sativa genetics involved…this one is very prolific!…
And the last one which is a very vigorous plant…
So there are the males I selected and I think they are all awesome!
Have you ever made seed, chosen males? If so leave me a comment, I would love to hear your experience.
