Spring is my favorite time of year to complete Spring Projects at My Off-Grid Property/FoodForest! I used to feel the same about fall (because of hunting season) but have lost any desire to kill. I am more about life at this stage of my life.
I have been trying to get the funds together to buy a piece of machinery to get all my dirt work done up there, but have not been able to. Thankfully my youngest son said he would foot the bill, and has. I bought a 1019 Bobcat e35 excavator. About a 3 ton machine that will be big enough to pull my stumps, dig ditch to expand my water capabilities, and prep the ground where I will be building structures.

Amazing how fast my Grandson picked up running the excavator after just a few minutes….check out his dexterity!
Things are going into high gear up there this summer! I have a hillside of stumps to pull, a few hundred feet of ditch to dig to expand my watering capabilities. This machine has the capability to do everything I need to do….even digging ponds….and I plan on many ponds!
I have a lot of plants I will be putting in the ground this year, as well as a lot of seeds I will be planting. I will wait to do that till after I get my excavator up there, so I can break up the ground and give my plants a better start. Spring Projects at My Off-Grid Property/FoodForest will never end and go on for years.

I also had a bunch of English Walnuts I grew from seed last year, all in the same big pots. I separated them and re potted them all in their own pots bare root this year. I also have some eastern trees I grew from seed, and will be getting established up there.

Every year I plan on taking cuttings, and propagating even more trees and shrubs to get growing up there. My foodforest will be a lifelong labor of love. I will add new cultivars every year, If I have extra funds I will buy trees as well. would love to buy a few hundred fruit, nut, and any other trees that catch my eye.
If any of you have funds you would like me to spend on trees and plants for my food-forest…let me know and send my way. I will keep you in the loop, and every penny will be spent on trees and plants, you would effectively be reducing your carbon footprint, and that would be amazing! I have though about creating a foodforest charity, but have not pulled the trigger on that yet.
I would also love donations of seeds, cuttings, live trees or plants, really anything that would help me on this journey. Just contact me to discuss….
Here are some of the over several hundred cuttings I am attempting to get rooted this year…

I am especially keen on getting Mulberries really going up there. I have cutting from very prolific female plants….I hope they root!
I will be heading up there soon, it will be about a month earlier in spring then where I live now. Will be interesting to see how many of my plants already growing there will survive the winter and be even that more established.
I will also be adding about 20 more homes for the homeless, all sized for the endangered Western Bluebird….which happens to be a good size for most of the birds that frequent that area.

Too, I meant to add, with elk numbers going up……
I will need to install a solar hot wire fence around my plantings, as anyone knows that are familiar with elk, they can be very destructive, and they eat alot!
Deer I might be able to deal with….but not elk!
Hmmm….I wonder if they make a fence post pounding attachment for my excavator…..
