My New E35 Bobcat Excavator, for those of you who may not know JustCannabisSeed.com does more then provide me with some income to supplement my retirement, it is also the source of all the monies I will use to make improvements in my 80 acre off grid food forest.

So far I have the well in, 5000 watts of solar installed, a high cube conex box for storage (with a few more to follow…I plan on a shop with two of these boxes as the walls) several ponds dug on my seasonal creeks (with more to follow) and a lance camper to stay in for now, and several hundred trees and other plants growing.

It has been a 3 year labor of love. And, now with the addition of my little 3 ton Bobcat E35 excavator (my son bought it for me) changes will begin to happen faster. I have a ton of dirt work to do to transform this corner of my property to the utopia I have envisioned. And I have always loved running equipment. Especially My New E35 Bobcat Excavator!

Wild Flowers Are Making Their Appearance

Spring brings a multitude of wildflowers blooming during the short window of time they have enough moisture to thrive. Most are done, and have produced next years seed by late June.

Here are some images of some of the wildflowers. Do you know what they are? If so tell us in a comment.

Besides My New E35 Bobcat Excavator

I am also planting many things that will bloom, and all the native pollinators love me…

Here is a bush that grows all over that country. We called it Bitter Brush, or Buck Brush growing up. I use to know a bee keeper who would more all his bee hives out into the woods to take advantage of the honey flow. I think when I introduce honey bees on my property, they may get a good part of their honey stores for the year from this plant.

Do you recognize it?

I grew Granddaddy Purple up there for seed last year and they grew well and made awesome seeds. This year I decided to grow some of an Indica strain I carry called D’Qar. Here they are, not looking great, but they are waiting for those long hot days of summer to get going. Indicas tend to be able to handle inclement weather a bit better that alot of Sativa’s, And this strain is likely going to have enough time to finish there.

The soil there is a bit rough, and I did not supplement it in this grow, so we will see how they do….

One of the main jobs I want to accomplish with the excavator is to clear out some of the oak brush that grows in thickly if you cut down any of those trees. The oak that grows there is called Oregon White Oak. The excavator is a beast and will pull some of the smaller stuff by just grabbing it with the thumb, and pulling it out….no digging needed. The bigger trees need to be dug down both sides and then pulled, the roots tend to go the 4 or 5 feet to bedrock.

I have 3 ponds on the property presently, I had them dug when I first bought the land some 25 years ago. Ponds in this country tend to be dug down to bedrock, as it is generally less the 6 feet deep.

One pond holds water well, one does not hold water at all, and one holds it for a month or two, these ponds are on a seasonal creek that stops running in April. I plan on many, many more ponds as that is a big part of permaculture in this country, keeping some of the water around long enough to benefit the landscape.

This seasonal creek is on my property for about 1/4 of a mile and I plan on that entire quarter mile being dotted with ponds, and swampy areas…ie. excellent wildlife habitat.

Here is the pond that holds water…

In true permaculture tradition I have installed my well pump solar direct, and that means when the sun shines on the solar panels they supply power to my variable voltage well pump and it pumps water….the whole time. On a good sunny day that means about 6 gals a minute. While that may not seem like much water, if you do the math, it is 360 gals an hour, and on a clear sunny day I figure about 2500+ gals per day.

Much of this water gives my various plantings a drink, but some of it is pumped up to a 500 gal tank I have on top of a nearby hill. Any over flow of this tank is simply run out on the ground utilizing about 60 ft of pvc pipe with holes running it’s length. This spreads the water down the entire hill, and will basically water anything with roots deep enough to take advantage (all my trees and shrubs once established.

On a side note, I noticed standing water at the bottom of the hill, and wondered if I dug a hole there could I create a small pond for my dogs, and of course wildlife. So with the help of the excavator I did exactly that, and have a small pool of water a couple feet deep. My dogs will be laying in it in the heat of summer…

Try Chinese Chestnuts. I planted a grove ten years ago and they are now 100 foot tall! Thanks to Caro nursery ( closed now though). My flock of Burbank- red were not much interested, however, the fisher cats were- the flock perished in 2015. Black walnuts are fun to start too! ~ Sean

Send me some seeds of your trees Sean, I will trade cannabis seeds for them. I do have a bunch of both Black Walnut, and English Walnut growing. I have wondered if they were going to love life up there, then realized the way I am watering them from underneath I was over watering them. I cut back, and they seemed to respond, but I will know more about that my next trip up there.
