The Best Time of Day to Water Outdoor Cannabis Plants

Watering Outdoor Cannabis Plants….Timing
Jerry here. If you’re hiking through the brush with five-gallon buckets or a heavy pack of water for your plants, you want every drop of that water to count. I’ve seen folks hauling water in the heat of a 90-degree afternoon, sweating through their shirts just to watch half of that moisture evaporate before it even hits the roots. So what is the best time of day to water outdoor cannabis plants?
In my fifty years of growing out in the elements, I’ve learned that timing isn’t just about plant health—it’s also about efficiency and keeping your “Ghost” profile low.
Morning vs. Night: The Ghost’s Watering Schedule…The Ghost
If you ask ten growers, you’ll get ten answers, but when you’re dealing with giant, thirsty plants in a guerrilla plot, there is a clear winner.
The Case for Early Morning (The Golden Hour):
This is my preferred time. Watering just as the sun is coming up allows the plant to drink deep before the heat of the day kicks in. It ensures the plant is fully hydrated during the peak ‘growth’ hours of the afternoon.
- The Benefit: Any water that splashes on the leaves will dry off quickly as the sun rises, preventing the “magnifying glass” effect that can burn foliage or, worse, invite powdery mildew.
The Danger of Night Watering:
While it’s cooler for the grower, watering at dusk can be a recipe for disaster.
- The Risk: Wet soil and high humidity at night are an open invitation for root rot and bud rot (Botrytis). In a secret spot where airflow might be restricted by heavy brush, you want those roots to be damp, but you don’t want the air around the plant to be even extra humid all night long.
Op-Sec Tip: Watering at dawn also has a tactical advantage. The morning mist and “blue hour” light make it much harder for someone to spot you from a distance. Plus, your footprints in the dew-covered grass will often “reset” themselves as the sun dries the field, leaving less of a trail for someone to follow.
Choose the right time of day to water your plants means making sure your water goes to the roots, not the atmosphere. Give them a good soak early, and let the sun do the rest.
