Does Molasses Actually Bulk Up Buds?

Should You Feed Cannabis Plants Molasses?
If you’ve spent any time in the forums or talking to old-timers, you’ve heard about the “Blackstrap Secret.” Some folks swear by it, while others think it’s just sticky folklore. After fifty years of feeding everything from garden-variety tomatoes to huge cannabis giants, I can tell you: it’s not just a myth, but it’s probably not doing what you think it’s doing.
You aren’t “feeding” the plant sugar so the buds get sweet. You’re feeding the soil…or more precisely what lives in the soil.
The Sugar Rush: Why I Use Molasses in Mid-Bloom…The Ghost
The soil in your guerrilla plot is a living, breathing ecosystem. It’s full of those indigenous microbes and fungi we talked about. During the flowering stage, your ladies are working overtime to stack resin and weight. Molasses provides a high-energy carbohydrate source for the microbes, which in turn helps the plant uptake phosphorus and potassium more efficiently.
The Ghost’s Tactical Feeding Guide:
- The Right Stuff: Always use Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses. The “sulphured” kind contains preservatives that can actually kill the beneficial bacteria you’re trying to grow.
- The Ratio: A little goes a long way. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons per gallon of lukewarm water. Make sure it’s fully dissolved so it feeds throughout the soil.
- The Timing: I start adding it around week 3 or 4 of flower. This is when the plant’s energy demands skyrocket.
- The Bonus: Molasses is loaded with micronutrients like magnesium, calcium, and iron—the exact minerals your ladies need mid-bloom.
Op-Sec Tip: Be careful with the “sweet” smell. In the wild, sugar can attract ants, bears, or even wild hogs. If you’re in a high-critter area, keep your molasses feedings moderate and well watered in.
It’s one of the cheapest ways to bulk up your harvest from a grow. It builds a “living soil” that plants simply love.
