When to Visit Your Guerrilla Grow and Stay Stealthy

Jerry here. If you’re visiting your “Ghost” spot at high noon on a weekday, you might as well be wearing a neon sign that says what is he doing? In the world of guerrilla growing, timing can be a part of your armor. You have to know when the woods are waking up, when the power that be are still drinking their coffee, and when the “civilians” are most likely not going to be out on the trails.

In fifty years of hiking to my guerrilla grows, I’ve mastered the art of the “invisible commute.” Here is how I time my visits to stay an invisible Ghost.

The “Blue Hour” Strategy: Owning the Clock…The Ghost

The most dangerous part of your grow isn’t the plants—it’s the path to them. You need to pick the windows of time when nobody else is around.

The Ghost’s Tactical Schedule:

  • The “Blue Hour” (Dawn): This is my favorite time. Most hikers and hunters don’t hit the trails until the sun is actually up. If you arrive at your parking spot 45 minutes before sunrise, you can be in the thicket and out of sight before most of the world even wakes up.
  • The “Dinner Window” (Dusk): People are creatures of habit. Around 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, folks are heading home for dinner. The woods get quiet right before dark. If you move during this window, you use the long shadows to your advantage.
  • Mid-Week is King: Never, ever visit your site on a weekend or a holiday. That is when “civilians” are in the woods. Monday through Thursday are the Ghost’s days.
  • The Weather Buffer: A light, steady rain is the best camouflage. Most people hate being wet, but the Ghost loves it. Rainy days are perfect days for a site visit.

Op-Sec Tip: Never park in the same spot over and over. If a local sees the same truck at the same trailhead multiple times, they may get curious and investigate. Park a mile away and hike in, or have someone drop you off “in motion.” (this works well if you are growing in some kind of busy spot.)

Mastering the clock can be just as important as mastering the soil. If they never see you, they can’t catch you.
