Jerry’s Home Grower’s Guide to Cannabis

Growing Cannabis From Seed to Harvest
Welcome to my Ultimate Home Grower’s Guide—a deep dive into everything you need to know about starting cannabis seeds and turning them into thriving plants.
I’m Jerry, the owner of Just Cannabis Seed and I have over 50 years of hands-on experience growing this incredible plant. This guide will be a collection of my favorite methods to grow cannabis and hopefully help you avoid some of the pitfalls I have encountered, and ultimately celebrate an epic harvest.
Whether you’re curious about germination methods, beginner growing tips, or my best cannabis strains for 2026, we’ll cover it all with real stories from my grows.
Always check local laws before growing cannabis, as legality varies by location—seeds are sold as novelties here at Just Cannabis Seed.
Who I Am and Why Just Cannabis Seed Exists
I’m Jerry, the 73-year-old founder of Just Cannabis Seed, and I’ve been passionately growing cannabis since 1968 when I was just a teenager experimenting with my first plants—a Santa Marta Colombian Gold and a Panama Red from some compressed brick weed back in the day.
Those equatorial sativas stretched tall and bushy but ran out of seasonal time (4500 ft above sea level) before fully flowering….and we did not really know better at the time…so got sore throats from smoking leaves! LOL There was literally zero info on growing cannabis then.
Over the decades since, I’ve tried every growing setup you can imagine: indoor with precise control, hydroponics for fast growth, massive 15-foot+ outdoor monsters under the sun, off-grid mountain plots that impressed me, and even stealthy guerrilla grows in remote spots.
I’ve battled spider mites that wiped out entire crops—I always choose to cull rather than spray harsh chemicals—and dealt with unexpected frosts that left me questioning my choices too many times.
But man-o-man, the joys of some of those bumper harvests made every struggle worth it! From celebrating pounds of resinous buds to sharing the bounty with friends, those moments fueled my love for this plant.
What really pushed me to start Just Cannabis Seed was frustration with the big seed banks. I’d shell out big bucks for overpriced seeds that arrived immature, hollow, or soft white duds that never sprouted.
I have been so disappointed, especially after investing time and hope, and money.
So, I decided to do it better: hand-selecting only fully mature, premium cannabis seeds with an 80%+ germination guarantee ( most customers boast 100% germination) or I replace them for free.

My 50+ years of experience aren’t just talk; I’m always an email or text away to guide you through your grow. This business funds my off-grid permaculture food forest in central Washington, where I’m focused on sustainable living and lowering everyone’s carbon footprints one seed at a time. It’s my passion now, blending cannabis cultivation with eco-friendly practices like companion planting and natural pest control.
Additionally, my journey has been about paying it forward. I’ve lost crops to pests, learned from disasters, and built an off-grid life around this. Customer stories inspire me—folks reporting 100% germination keep me going.

Why Grow Your Own in 2026?
In 2026, home growing cannabis is more appealing than ever, growing quality home bud is superior to store-bought…every time. Freshness, custom strains without chemicals, and the pure joy of harvesting your own—it is priceless IMO. From my 50 years of loving this plant, nothing matches nurturing a seed to a huge impressive plant, covered in flowers. It is therapy tending plants…transformative therapy.
Back in the ’70s, growing was risky and underground, but today, with legalization spreading, it’s accessible to many folks here in the USA. Why risk mediocre commercial weed, often laced with pesticides when home grows ensure purity? I have never trusted quality control in rec shops.
From my outdoor plots (my favorite way to grow), sun-powered monster plants have yielded 5-10 pounds per plant, high volume, and high quality.Additionally, economic perks: Save hundreds annually.
However, always check local laws before growing cannabis, as legality varies by location.
From experience, starting small builds confidence. Although I would grow several plants and not just one. In one ’90s indoor setup, I vegged under 1000 watt HPS for weeks, resulting in bushes that produced over a pound per light, the strain was called Big Bud, and it did not disappoint. When growing cannabis one needs to be aware of ‘plant time’. What is plant time? It is the fact plants take some time to respond to stimuli, or manipulations. One must respond to the plants in their time….patience is key.
Getting Started as a Beginner
If you’re new to growing, welcome!
Start small with 2-4 plants to avoid being overwhelmed. This Home Grower’s Guide is packed with beginner growing tips from my 50 years of experience.
I am not great at keeping records….but it is good to journal everything: Dates, temps, observations—let your records be your teacher, time makes specifics fade.
My best advice to beginners is to just relax, don’t worry about all the growing hype one can find online. Cannabis is a very easy, forgiving plant to grow…as a matter of fact it grows like a weed, as it is often called. Enjoy the experience, we were all beginners, you have got this…and you have got my help if you need it.
Choosing the Right Cannabis Seed Types

Selecting cannabis seeds to match your experience, setup and preference —regular cannabis seeds for vigor/breeding and buds (have to cull males), autoflowers for speed, and feminized (only females) for just buds.
From my early grows, regulars (50/50 male/female) were all there was available but need sexing. Culling males is easy, I will walk you through it via email if you like. I am always around to answer customer questions. I love breeding cannabis creating resilient F1 hybrids, many of which will demonstrate hybrid vigor…here is what Google says about hybrid vigor….
“Hybrid vigor (heterosis) in cannabis is the enhanced vitality, growth, yield, and resilience seen in first-generation (F1) hybrids from crossing two genetically distinct parents, resulting in stronger, faster, more uniform, and disease-resistant plants than their ancestors, combining desirable traits like faster growth, bigger yields, and better pest resistance, though subsequent generations (F2+) often lose this uniformity.”
Many breeders try to breed the next ‘Big Thing” in cannabis strains, but truthfully a good breeding program takes 100’s of plants. I can only grow a few where I live (I ALWAYS stay compliant these days) so I stick to just producing seed from known and popular strains, for the most part.
Mastering Germination Methods: My Ultimate Favorite Approach

Germination is the foundation, and over the last 50 years, I’ve tried pretty much everything—paper towels, water soaks, rockwool, root riot cubes, and directly into soil. But my absolute favorite, used 100% time, (if I am serious about it) is direct soil with humidity dome and heat mat. It’s natural, low-stress, yielding 95-100% with my mature seeds.
It is just reliable… Why? It mimics nature: Seeds fall, get covered lightly with warm moist soil…then they sprout without any handling. No transplant shock, stronger roots from start.
I have never liked everyone’s favorite germination method…the paper towel method, mainly because I do not think small sprouts should be handled at all.
If however I have plenty of seeds and I don’t want to mess with all of that…I will simply plant in their forever home pot, and put 3 or 4 seeds per planting hole. Then I generally cull the weakest seedlings leaving only the one I consider the winner.
Now for the details of my favorite method if I really want these seeds to sprout:
Start with fully mature seeds that are just waiting for their chance to germinate…like JCS guarantees ( I pride myself in only offering fully mature seeds.)
I love to use domed seed starting trays one can get at a grow shop, on from one of my favorite places online…Amazon. Here is an image of the trays I use…

Step-by-step germination method:
1. Use high quality seed starting potting soil, and fill loosely. I like to plant my seeds right in the middle so I know where they are.
2. Make a hole ¼-½ inch deep, seed pointy end down (this is where the taproot emerges),
cover with soil, and tamp down a bit…you want the seed in contact with the soil.
3. Water deeply the first watering, then sparingly with a spray battle after that.
4. Set the tray on the heat mat and plug it in. Here is two types of heat mats…

5. Cover with the dome, and let a bit of air in via the vent. Use a high/low thermometer/hydrometer inside to monitor.
6. Put in a warm spot, I generally put them under an LED light. I believe the light can help with mold/mildew problems.
7. Check twice daily, mist if dry, wipe condensation. Sprouts generally appear in just a few days…
I have had seeds take a full two weeks to make an appearance before, but mine generally pop pretty fast.
8. Remove dome gradually over 2-3 days after they sprout.
9. Transplant when they have 2-3 true leaves, and their roots fill cell (makes getting them out to transplant easier.
The image below is a germination test of some of my strains…I think they passed….

Troubleshoot: If after two weeks or so go by and you have some no shows, you can take a toothpick and dig down very gently down to the seed to determine if it is trying to sprout but is slow, or shows no sign of germination at all (quite possibly a dud). If you inadvertently put the seed in upside down, and it is sprouting you can gently turn it around.
Scarification of cannabis seeds:I have never done much of this, but if you have old seeds and you find they simply do not want to germinate you can give this method a try. Basically scarification is weakening the seeds outside shell so the embryo can ‘break’ it easier. This is accomplished very carefully using a razor blade, or by scuffing the seed with sand paper.
Finally again: Patience is key give the seeds up to 15 days to make their showing.
The Seedling Stage: Life Begins
The seedling stage is one of the most exciting and crucial phases in a cannabis plant’s life! After the anticipation of germination, watching that tiny sprout emerge is truly magical. But this delicate phase requires a watchful eye and a gentle hand to ensure your little ones thrive. Cannabis seedlings are a bit fragile.
Once your seed cracks and that taproot emerges, you will have a seedling popping through the soil! These youngsters are susceptible to a common woe called “damping off.” This fungal disease causes young stems to rot at the soil line, and it’s often a result of over-watering or poor air circulation. To prevent this, ensure your growing medium is well-draining and avoid letting it stay soggy.
A gentle fan can help with air circulation, as well as create strong stems…but don’t blast them! You don’t really want seedlings being moved by the wind.

When it comes to feeding, less is definitely more for seedlings. Most initial growing mediums contain enough nutrients to sustain them for the first week or two.
Once they develop their first true leaves (the serrated ones, not the initial rounded cotyledons), you can introduce a very diluted nutrient solution – think 1/4 or even 1/8 strength of your regular vegetative feed. Overfeeding is a common mistake and can quickly “burn” their delicate roots.
Watering is perhaps the most critical aspect. Seedlings have small root systems and are easily over-watered. I like to water them with a spray bottle, watering them through their tiny leaves as well, and over watering is less likely.
Allow the top of your growing medium to dry out before watering again. But remember seedlings roots may not go that deep yet. But when you do water, do so gently and evenly, ensuring the entire root zone gets moisture without becoming waterlogged at all. Good drainage is a must.
Lift your pots to feel their weight – a light pot needs water, a heavy one doesn’t. This is my ‘go to’ if they are in pots. You can have a room full of pots and easily only water those that need it.
Finally, consistent care is key. Maintain stable temperatures (around 70-78°F or 21-26°C) and moderate humidity (60-70%).
Provide ample light, but don’t overwhelm them; a gentle LED at an appropriate distance is perfect. Observe your seedlings daily for any signs of stress, yellowing, or drooping. Catching issues early is your best defense.
With a little care and attention, your seedlings will soon be ready to transition into the vigorous vegetative stage!
The Vegetative Stage: Building a Strong Foundation
Once seedlings have true leaves (1-2 weeks post-germ), veg begins—the explosive growth phase I love. From early grows, long veg sets one up for massive yields.
Nutrition: High nitrogen is needed. Start quarter-strength organics week 2, then I move to full strength. Cannabis tends to be a hungry plant and can be pushed to it’s maximum growth with ferts.
Monitor: No fertilizer burn…or slight will not hurt…then you know it is growing to it’s full potential. I like to get the plants just as big as I can get them to grow during the veg window…if I am looking for the max harvest weight.
The Flowering Stage: From Stretch to Fat Buds

Flip to 12/12 for photoperiods (autos will auto of course).
They tend to stretch, and can double in height, so plan for that!
Timeline: Indicas 7-9 weeks, sativas 8-12, autos even sooner….
Environment: 12/12 strict, 65-80°F, cooler nights=colors/terps, maintain 40-50% humidity to prevent humidity issues.
Nutrition: Use a bloom formula that is high in P/K, then flush the final 1-2 weeks for a clean harvest.
Trichomes: Aim for 70% milky, and realize that 20-30%+ amber trichomes=couch-lock. Harvest too early and the smoke will likely be harsh, Harvest later for a smoother smoke, and a sleepy high.
Top Cannabis Strains…My Personal Favorites

Sour 60 Auto: My favorite auto…#1 beginner, 60 days (more or less), 15-18% THC, purple phenos grape flavors.
Gorilla Glue Auto: 20-25% THC, relaxing.
Santa Marta Gold: Psychedelic, huge outdoor.
Sugar Haze: These plants can get big, and the buds….rolled in sugar!.
The Black: Purple mold-resistant. A fun plant to grow…watch for that very dark pheno!
Panama Red: Euphoric red hairs. Gets big outdoors…
