Transporting Seedlings For a Guerilla Grow

Jerry here. I get asked all the time about the best way to hike through three miles of thicket with a tray of fragile seedlings without snapping their necks or tipping them over, or being seen. My answer usually surprises people: Don’t do it.

Trying to transport “ready-to-plant” seedlings into a rugged guerrilla spot is a recipe for disaster. One trip on a root, one low-hanging branch, or one slip in the mud, and your whole season is face-down in the dirt. I speak with the voice of experience here…I have dropped more then one tray of plants.

The On-Site Nursery: The 75-Cup Strategy…The Ghost

If you have an established spot—or a general area where you’re running several small patches—the best move is to build a “Nursery Box” and pack it right out there in the woods.

The Ghost’s Tactical Nursery Setup:

  • The Build: Cut a single sheet of 3/4-inch plywood and build a box roughly 2ft x 4ft and 2ft high. This is your “hardened” base. I like using pressure treated 3/4 inch plywood…although it is expensive.
  • The Liner: Line the inside with two or three layers of heavy-duty black plastic. You want it to hold about 3 inches of water at the bottom of the box to create a self-wicking environment so you don’t have to visit very often (this much water generally lasts for a week.)
  • The Capacity: I use 16oz Styrofoam cups (the old soda cup style). You can fit about 75 of those in a box this size. That’s enough to start your main crop and have plenty of “backups” if you need them.
  • The Screen Top: Make a tight-fitting frame with window screening for the lid. This is critical. It lets the sunlight in but keeps out the mice, birds, and squirrels that love to snack on fresh sprouts, and seeds. I like to use screen that 1/4 inch mesh, big enough to let light in but small enough to keep out the smallest mouse. I have done this before without the screen, came back to find a neat little hole in all the cups, and every seed eaten.
  • Planting Your Cups: I would generally plant 3 or even 4 seeds per cup. This way you will for sure have a plant in each cup, and if you like you can simply cull all but your favorite seedling.

Op-Sec Tip: Paint the outside of that box in a “forest-flat” camo or dark brown, then tuck it deep in the brush, so it is basically invisible for any distance away. By germinating on-site, you only hike in with a pocket full of bulk seeds and a small bag of starting mix (that can fit in your pack). You stay light, you stay fast, and you stay a Ghost.

Try to not place your box where it is in standing water, and if built well you will have a way to sprout plants for many years! For the ultimate Ghost strategy do this from a boat, on a remote shore.
