Nature Finds a Way…My Surprise Volunteer Cannabis Plant

Volunteer Cannabis Plants Seem Follow Me Around!

Everywhere I go, cannabis plants seem to grow. Volunteer cannabis plants seem to come up every year, no matter how much I try to keep things orderly. They find the cracks, they find there way into other seeds I may have (as this one did…it was in my sqaush seeds), and they always find a way to surprise me.

This year, the surprise came right out of the middle of my hillside garden bed at Stony Oasis. I was walking the rows, checking on the progress of my squash plants, when I noticed a set of leaves that definitely didn’t belong to a zucchini. Right there, nestled in with some squash plants, was a kind of sad, perfectly healthy cannabis seedling reaching up for the sun.

There is something incredibly special about a seed that chooses its own home. They don’t get coddled in a plug tray, and they don’t get a carefully measured dose of nutrients. They just hit the dirt somewhere they shouldn’t be, dig their roots deep into the soil, and survival with what nature gives them .

Finding this little fighter instantly took me back a couple of seasons. If you’ve been following along for a while, you probably remember the legendary rogue plant a customer named Sir Wild Thing. That plant became a community favorite, and I ended up chronicling its entire journey—from tracking whether it was going to be a male or female, to watching how massive it got after all the topping—in the post Volunteer Cannabis Plants – Just Cannabis Seed.

Sir Wild Thing showed us all the raw power and vigor that can come packed inside an accidental genetic survivor. We even talked about using those genetics to breed the “Ultimate Volunteer” strain. Seeing this new sprout pushing up next to the squash makes me wonder if that unstoppable wild streak is making a comeback.

For now, I’m going to let this new volunteer ride and see what it turns into. It’s earned its spot in the garden, and if it has even half the spirit of Sir Wild Thing, we are in for a fun show this summer.
