Summer in the Food-Forest! Had a good trip up to my property. Was a nice summer day, a gentle breeze to give a bit of relief from the heat.

I wanted to see if the filters for the drip irrigation were plugged from the minerals in the well water after about 3 weeks. And, they were….I will need to get up there every 2 weeks from here on, when it is hot anyways.

Some of the many kinds of plants I have introduced are thriving, some are just holding their own, or growing slowly, and some simply do not like that environment. One of my main objectives at this point is to introduce a wide variety of cultivars, and simply let nature sort them out. The strong will survive, and the weak will not.

Many of the long cuttings I put down to bedrock in the spring will grow, so I will be adding hundreds of plants in this very quick and easy way.

I have also scattered many wildflower seeds, and many of them are growing and getting established. Some will propagate from their seed year after year.

Many of the trees are showing vigorous growth, there are maple trees growing 2-3 ft this year. The Chinese elm trees are taking off, which isn’t surprising. There are some very happy apple, mulberry, walnut, black locus, apricot, sycamore, cottonwood, willow, oak trees, and likely a few others as well. fine Summer in the Food-Forest.

Here is some images from my visit…

I found it interesting that the game block I put in my bird feeder last time I was there was gone. Made me wonder how the birds, even with the help of the squirrels, could devour the whole thing.

I have a game cam right on the block so was interested in seeing what happened to it.

So I check my images from the game cam and come to this one…

Summer in the Food-Forest

The last image of the block being in the feeder. You can see that the critters have been busy on it.

I would say the lions share has been packed away by squirrels to put away down in their borrows for the winter months.

The Blue Jays love it as well and make a dent.

So the very next video on the camera shows the next morning, and the block is mysteriously ….GONE!

Hmm, I hate that when something has obviously happened, but I have no image of what it was!

Summer in the Food-Forest

I know that little chick-a-dee did not eat the whole thing!

Truthfully these game cams miss things that happen on occasion.

I was baffled, nothing looked amiss, besides the game block being gone??

I would think anything big enough to take the whole thing, would have left some kind of sign?? Or would have pushed the post over a bit, since it is not very deeply buried.

Then….close to the end of the photos on the sim card….I finally got my answer, and here it is….

Summer in the Food-Forest

Can you see what that is?

If you said the snout of a bear, you would be right.

A bear was able to climb up to about 10 feet high on that 4×4 post and take the entire game block.

He is the reason I built the bird feeder in the first place.

When I would leave them on the ground he would come and eat the whole block in one setting.

And, now he is able to even when they are up in the bird feeder! Hmm, not sure what I will do to alleviate that problem, if you have ideas, please leave them in a comment, Summer in the Food-Forest.

Oh, too, I got a video on another camera of the very bear….
