I had a report of poor germination of my Panama Red seed.
What to do?
Conduct a germination test of course, see if my seeds are becoming slow to germinate. So I choose 24 of my strains (those I have grown out myself, including the Panama Red of course) and rather then just put them in wet paper towels, I actually planted them in potting soil with bottom heat and humidity domes…

I planted a couple seeds per hole for a total of 12 seeds per strain. I planted 24 of my best selling seeds, including the Panama Red seeds that were said to not germinate well.
I think it is a good idea to run a test like this every couple of years, and especially if I get any germination complaints.
Truthfully, I was a bit nervous…will my seeds sprout well? Is my germination rate falling off on these seeds that are all less then 2 years old? I certainly hoped not!
Well I did not need to worry, the folks that had issues with germination, well just had issues with germination….whether lack of experience, poor technique, lack of a green thumb, or whatever….the issue was not my seed!
I planted 12 seeds of 24 strains for a total of 288 seeds put in the ground. I had 3 no shows for a 98.6 germination rate. I would think that is about as good as it gets! Here are some images of the sprouting seeds….

As you can see they are all coming up nicely. And they all made an appearance in just 3 days! I am satisfied with this germ rate.
Here is a couple videos I uploaded to YouTube showing the plants a few days later…
Conclusion
I think it is safe to say if you buy any of these seeds you should not have germination issues.

Oh, and the The Panama Red Strain that was in question?? 100% germination of course!
In regards to the seed germination test … I have been dealing with Jerry now for about four years now… I’ve grow many of his strains, never had a problem… I’ve just bought some seeds back in October and five different strains, and had a 99% success, just like always….
I grow most of the seeds I sale these days Doyle, so they are about as fresh as you will find. And, by far the comment I receive most is…(100% germination)!
Hey Jerry, so I decided to conduct my own test. I decided to run your seeds for the summer. I started wicked white widow, some misc fems you sent, 2 big bud seeds, 4 sugar haze seeds 2 of the black.. Everything germinated. I lost 1 of the black and 1 of the misc fems they kinda just broke out and died. But everything else appears to be running strong. So far I havent had any germination issues. And am saving up to do another big order in a month or 2 from you. Im really happy with germ rates.
Awesome Ben, let me know how the grow goes. Truthfully I wondered how the germ rate would be on that many strains, guess my storage of the seeds I have is good.
Every seed type I have received from you has great germination rates most 100%
Check out the first picture 4th row from the right side. Those be FREE SEEDS I see germinating everywhere. When I see the free seeds germinating like that I know the seeds I buy are going to be great. Unfortunately when we first start growing and even those that have grown a few years we all make mistakes that can kill our germination rates. When it happens we should double check everything we did. When I have to do a double look I find were I messed up. So if I have a crop fail to germinate I keep quite and try to pop more of the same seeds. Once I figured out what I did wrong the second attempt pop every time and I don’t have to go back and apologize for complaining seeds were no good when it was me that messed up.
Jerry I am glad you continue to check the germination rates on the seeds you sell. I can tell you all your seeds have been and will continue to be the best we can buy. PopPop
Thanks for that PopPop, and I agree with everything you have said. I have thrown some seeds in pots before and had less then perfect germination rates, but it was because how I handled them rather then the seeds viability. This test I used humidity domes, bottom heat, sprayed them every day, I basically wanted them to have the best chance to germinate successfully, and was not disappointed.
All 17 of my panama reds germinated.
Did not figure it was on your end but hey things can happen! I am glad to see the wonderful vindication results and will have to get some panama red for sure! man that was one of the greats back when!
I meant to add, I grew Panama Red and Santa Marta Colombia Gold back in 1960’s I use to buy them both by the pound back in those days. Lots of seeds. The plants as I remember were very sativa, very bushy, and very long winded. I grew them outdoors at 4500 ft elevation. They did not come close to finishing. We did not know and smoked the leaves….lol
That being said the Panama Red strain I have has some obvious Indica characteristics, I have looked online and have read the Original Panama Red had broad leaves. I do know the strain I have can produce flowers that have hairs that turn pink. I have also read some where this is common for the strain.
