You’ve spent months dodging hikers and hunters, hauling water, and keeping your ladies hidden in your guerilla grow. You’ve finally harvested those fully flowered giants and they’re hanging in the drying room, or under a tree. Now comes the most critical question….how to cure your cannabis and “Is it ready for the jar?”

I’ve seen more harvests ruined in the final week of drying. Jar it too early, and you’re looking at mold and that “hay” smell that never goes away. Jar it too late, and you’ve got brittle buds that burns your throat, and don’t ‘age’ well.

Don’t Guess Your Dry Time! Use the Snap Test…The Ghost

After fifty years of trial and error, I don’t use fancy moisture meters or high-tech sensors. I use my ears and my fingers. We call it the Snap Test, and it is the gold standard for knowing when your buds have moved from “too wet” to “perfect.”

How to Perform the Ghost’s Snap Test:

• The Selection: Don’t test the big, chunky main colas first—they hold moisture the longest. Pick a medium-sized branch about the thickness of a toothpick.
• The Sound: Bend the stem slowly. If it just folds over like a wet noodle, it’s still way too wet. If it shatters into two pieces with a sharp CRACK, you might have waited a day too long.
• The Sweet Spot: You want a clean, audible snap, but the stem should stay attached by a little bit of fiber. It should feel like a dry twig breaking, not a wet vine bending.
• The Bud Feel: At the same time the stem snaps, the outside of the bud should feel “crispy” to the touch, but if you squeeze it gently, it should still have a little “spring” in the center.

Op-Sec Tip for Drying: If you’re drying in a remote shed or a “Ghost” location, remember that the smell is at its peak right now. Use carbon filters or stay far away from downwind neighbors. Don’t let the ‘smell’ give you away!

Once you get that snap, it’s time to jar ’em up and start the cure. This is where the magic happens and the true terpene profile of your harvest finally comes to life.
