How Much Weed in Brownies? The Edible Dose Guide

How Much Weed is a Dose in Edibles?

I see this question often.

A grower spends four months hovering over their plants, drying them to perfection, and then they just toss raw buds into a batch of brownies and wonder why they don’t feel a thing. If you want your edibles to actually work, you have to understand three things: the math, the “decarb”, and my own method of determining the best dose.

When people ask “how much weed in brownies,” they usually want a magic number. But the truth is, it depends on the potency of your flower. If you’ve got 20% THC flower, every gram contains 200mg of THC. If you put 7 grams into a cup of butter, you’ve got 1,400mg of THC in that butter. Divide that by a standard 16-count brownie tray, and you’re looking at nearly 90mg per square. For most people, that’s a one-way ticket to a very long, very uncomfortable nap….overdosing is just never fun…

The Math for Any Recipe: To determine the right amount for any recipe, use this formula: (Grams of flower) x (1000) x (THC percentage) / (Number of servings) = mg per serving.

If you are a beginner, aim for 5–10mg per serving. If you’ve been at this as long as I have, you might want more, but remember: edibles take 30-60 minutes to kick in. Don’t go back for seconds too soon. (Yeah I have done this more then once)

Don’t Forget the Decarb: Before that weed goes near the butter, it has to be decarboxylated. You need to bake your ground flower at 240°F for about 40 minutes. This “activates” the THC. Without this step, you’re just eating an expensive, weed-flavored edible. I always use my “popcorn” buds or high-quality trim for my batches—it keeps the cost down without sacrificing the kick. Just remember to simmer your butter on low heat; you want to infuse it, not fry it.

Pro Tip: Here is how I figure out a dose much of the time. I simply try to get close to the dose that works for me, then I test a dose…take it and see what happens. If it is a bit strong I cut the dose down, a bit weak I eat more. Then I know my best dose from that batch of edibles. I also like to use cannabutter in most of my edibles…
