Will a Plant be Male or Female? Is There a Difference in Their Seeds?
I have written a short article on sexing cannabis seeds once before. Here is a link to it… Can You Tell Whether A Cannabis Plant Will Be Male Or Female By Just Looking At The Seed?
Truthfully I have long had my doubts about the validity of this technique.
But, I have been talking to a customer who has used this technique for years (thanks Jeremy), and he swears by it. So I am intrigued, and want to do an experiment I have been thinking about for years.
So here is how it will go, I sent Jeremy about 30 Sour 60 Auto Seeds, and he has sexed them. He has chosen those he feels will be females, and males. And, he will send me 15 seeds he thinks will be females, I will grow them out and see if indeed they are females.
If they all are and he is right, I am going all in on the technique, as there is no way to simply guess. Then I will do a big write up, and share the technique on Youtube ect.
So, this will be an ongoing post throughout the experiment, so stay tuned for the updates.
Talk soon…
9/15/14….I have gotten the seeds from Jeremy, and have planted them. I have nine plants for this experimental grow.
But are they all female? No, they are not, all but a few have shown sex and there is a male lurking in the group. Here they are… If you look closely you can see the one on the far right is showing his masculinity.

Here he is close up…on the right…
And here is one of his sisters on the left…
So is this a deal breaker as far as this technique for distinguishing a male seed from a female seed?
Nope, not at all!
Generally when growing regular seed (not feminized) you should get a ratio of around 50% male and female.
Not all these plants have shown their sex yet, and I will do an update when they do.
Right now out of the 9 plants there are 5 females, and only this one male. That my friends may well be a successful experiment.
What, you say, how is that a success? Their is a male?
Yes, there is a male, but keep in mind male plants are usually the first to flower (they want to be ready when the females join them.) So that leads me to believe the rest of the plants will be female…time will tell.
If that is the case, or even if there is one more male, this technique may well have some merit, and prove useful for my customers, as one out of nine is a good ratio for regular seed when growing sensimilla.
So, this experiment is not over. Regardless of how many males I get in this grow, I will be sending Jeremy another batch of seed to chose the female seed from, and I will be growing them out as well. I may do 3 or 4 grows before I am done with this.
Stay tuned….
Update…9/27/24…The experiment (Sexing Cannabis Seeds) Continued…
OK, so Jeremy sent me some of his chosen seeds. I grew them out and got 12 plants. 11 of those plants are female, and only one was a male! This is a win for this experiment!
So the experiment will go on. I have now sent Jeremy over 100 Gorilla Glue Auto seeds, he is going to do his magic….choose the female seed and send them back to me.
I will then send them out to about 10 testers to grow out, then we will have very conclusive evidence about this technique.
Here is an image of those female Sour 60 Plants….in hind sight I wish I had kept the male, as I now realize I am getting low on those seeds. For bulk seeds visit BulkWeedSeed.com

Hey Jerry, I have a problem with my current grow and I know I’m off topic but yall are my only trusted info source… if you could direct me to where I could find some assistance with a number of issues I’m running in to…
I apologize for high jacking your post…
Sincerely , Spike
No worries, get back to me in an email, and tell me what is going on…
I love this idea! I always try to guess myself. I hope it all works out like yall want it to. I’m excited to find out what you find out!! Good luck!
Sounds interesting. I had an old friend tell me the same. Something about if there’s a dimple on the bottom of the seed. I was always a skeptic but it would be really cool if it was true.
We will be finding out, I have wanted to do this experiment for years.
