Vintage Cannabis Genetics: The Way It Used to Be

Lately, it seems like every new strain is named after a dessert. Everything is “Cake,” “Gelato,” or “Zkittlez.”

While those are fine for some, they lack the complex aroma of the vintage cannabis genetics we grew up with. In the 70s and 80s, we didn’t have 30% THC “lab-grown” monsters. We had plants that were bred for the “high,” not just the “hype.”

The “Clear” Sativa and the “Deep” Indica Vintage genetics like Panama Red, Kona Gold, Santa Marta Colombia Gold, or the original Acapulco Gold offered a clear-headed, electric euphoria that modern poly-hybrids just can’t match. Today, everything has been crossed so many times that the effects have become “muddled.” You get a bit of a head buzz and a bit of a body stone, but nothing distinct. When you go back to the vintage lines, you get the pure experience. I am always looking for landrace strains…got one…let me know!

Why the “Old School” Matters At 73 years old, I remember the specific “funk” of a true Skunk #1 or the spicy, incense-laden smoke of a pure Thai landrace (think Thai stick in the 70’s). These weren’t just about getting “stoned”; they were about the experience. These vintage plants also had a different kind of vigor. They were meant to be grown outside, under the sun, by people who might only see them once a week….no babying here!

Preserving the Genetics…At Just Cannabis Seed, I consider myself a historian of sorts. I’m not interested in the “flavor of the week.” I’m interested in preserving the genetics that the pioneers of this industry built, in the 60’s and 70’s.
