Yellow Leaves in Flower: Flush or Feed?

Yellow leaves on Cannabis...good or bad?

Are Yellow Leaves During Flowering Bad?

It happens to the best of us. You hike out to your secret spot in the middle of a heavy flowering cycle, and instead of that deep, lush green you saw last week, your ladies are starting to look yellow.

Seeing yellow leaves as the plants begin flower can send a grower into a panic. Your first instinct is usually to dump a gallon of high-nitrogen “grow” nutrients on them or, conversely, to flush them with ten gallons of water because you think you’ve overdone it. Before you do either, you need to understand if you even have a problem.

Don’t Panic Over The Fade! Understanding Week 6+ Yellowing…The Ghost

In my fifty years of growing cannabis, I’ve learned that onset of flowering is the “tipping point.” This is when the plant starts shifting all its energy from the leaves into the buds.

The Ghost’s Troubleshooting Checklist:

  • The “Fade” (Natural Senescence): If the yellowing is starting at the very bottom of the plant and moving slowly upward, and the leaves are falling off easily, you are likely just seeing “The Fade.” The plant is mobile-loading nutrients into the flowers. In this case: Do nothing. Let it finish naturally.
  • Nutrient Burn: If the tips of the leaves are yellow, brown, and “crispy,” but the rest of the leaf is green, you’ve overfed. Flush with plain, pH-balanced water for one or two waterings.
  • Lockout vs. Deficiency: If the yellowing is splotchy or happening at the top of the plant first, your pH is likely off, causing a “lockout.” Flush first to reset the soil, then Feed at half-strength.

Op-Sec Tip: A yellowing plant stands out against a green forest backdrop like a neon sign. If your “Fade” is getting too bright, you may need to add some extra camouflage or “Ghost” brush to break up the silhouette. Or, simply defoliate the yellowing leaves.

Experience is the best means of knowing when to step in and when to stay out of Mother Nature’s way. If the buds look healthy and the resin is stacking, don’t over-correct nor jump to conclusions.
