Jerry here. One of the most common questions I get from folks buying my seed packs is the “math of the harvest.” If you have a legal limit of 10 plants, or you’ve cleared a “Ghost” spot specifically for a 10-pack of those 15-foot giants, you might think you only need to sprout 10 seeds.

In my fifty years of growing, I’ve learned that nature doesn’t always play by your rules. If you start with 10 seeds to get 10 plants, you are gambling with your season. I always like to have insurance.

The Grower’s Insurance: Why 10 Never Equals 10…The Ghost

Whether you are buying bulk seeds or premium fems, you have to account for the some that may not ‘make it.’ Between germination rates, “damping off,” and the occasional critter snack, you will lose a few plants along the way.

The Ghost’s Formula for Success:

• The 1.5x Rule: My personal rule of thumb is to start 1.5 times the number of plants I actually want to finish. For a 10-plant harvest, I’m dropping 15 seeds.
• The Selection Process: Starting extra allows you to be ruthless. Don’t waste your time hauling water to a “runt.” By starting 15, you can pick the strongest, fastest-growing 10 and culls the weak ones before they ever leave the nursery.
• Regular vs. Feminized: If you are using “Regular” seeds (not feminized), the math changes. Since you’ll likely get a 50/50 split of males and females, you need to start 25 seeds to ensure you end up with 10 solid ladies.
• The “Backup” Plan: I always keep the “extra” five plants in smaller pots for an extra two weeks. If critters dine on a few, or some simply do not want to ‘take off’ you will have replacements.
