Growing Monster Cannabis Plants: Jerry’s ‘Caterpillar’ Trenching Trick

Growing 8-10 lbs Huge Cannabis Plants

Jerry here. If you want to move past the “hobbyist” stage and start growing monster cannabis plants that break the scales, you have to stop thinking vertically. Most folks want their Sativas to hit the clouds, but tall is not always better.

I’ve grown 5-8-lb monsters using a technique that keeps the plant low to the dirt but turns it into a nutrient-sucking machine. It’s labor-intensive, so I don’t do this in a “hit-and-run” guerrilla spot, but if you have a secure location where you can put in the work, this is one way to grow BIG!

The “Cannabis Caterpillar”: Growing Monster Cannabis Plants…The Ghost

The secret is a process called Trench Layering. You’re essentially turning the entire main stalk of the plant into one massive root ball.

Here is My Step-by-Step Monster Cannabis Plant Guide:

  • The Bend: Start with a tall-leaning Sativa or hybrid. When she’s about 2 feet tall, you begin gently bending her toward the ground. Do it over a few days so you don’t snap the stem.
  • The Pin: You keep at it until the stem is literally flat against the earth. As she grows, you keep pinning her down until you have 10 feet of stalk running horizontal.
  • The Burial: This is the magic part. You cover that entire pinned-down stem with rich soil.
  • The Root Surge: You water the entire length of that buried stem. Cannabis is “adventitious”—it will start throwing out new roots along every inch of that 10-foot stalk.
  • The Forest of Colas: Every side branch that was pointing “out” is now pointing “up.” Instead of one main cola, you now have dozens of “top” branches, each acting like its own individual plant, all fed by a 10-foot long super-root….and all competing to be that top bud.

Op-Sec Tip: Because this plant is flat to the ground, this is your starting point. A 10-foot “caterpillar” hides better than a 15-foot tree. That being said, if your plant grows well, the whole 10 ft of stems/plants can get 15 ft tall anyways. Basically the 20-30 stems become like individual plants, although all the exact genetics of the original plant.

I have always enjoyed pushing my plants to explore their limits. This is just another technique to do this, along with low stress training, super-cropping, FIMing, and scrog.

There ya go, yet another way to manipulate the cannabis plant to grow some real monsters. Ready to give it a try, if so please do a grow diary on my new forum….Cannagrowforum.com.
