From Pre-Flower to Stretch…Managing Cannabis Plants Beginning to Flower

As day length shortens in late summer, photoperiod cannabis plants shift their energy from vegetative leaf growth to flower production.

This transition phase is one of the most crucial windows in the growing season. How you manage your canopy, nutrition, and pest control right now directly determines your final harvest weight and bud quality come autumn.

Managing the Pre-Flower Stretch

During the first few weeks of the flowering transition, plants experience a rapid surge in height known as the stretch. To keep plants manageable and structurally sound:

• Install Structural Supports: Set up trellis netting, heavy-duty cages, or bamboo stakes before heavy colas develop. Late-season wind and autumn rains will easily snap unsupported branches. I have not supported the plants in this years hugelkultur grow to show how tough my genetics are…this may end being a mistake…
• Prune Interior Understory: Clear out weak, shaded lower branches and interior growth (lollipopping). This directs energy to top colas and improves airflow through the center of the canopy….Again I did not do this on this years grow either….but those big lower branches can actually break, fall the short distance to the ground…stay attached and finish anyways. Plus I am growing seed and not really buds per say…so will not be an issue.

Adjusting Late-Summer Nutrition

As plants shift from veg to bloom, their nutritional needs change significantly:

• Taper Off Nitrogen: Excess nitrogen late in summer causes leafy, airy buds and delays flower maturation. (although when making seed I generally feed a full spectrum fertilizer through the entire grow…making sure the seeds have all they need to mature well)
• Boost Phosphorus & Potassium: Increase P and K inputs to support early flower development, root strength, and cell wall structure…and create BIGGER flowers.
• Incorporate Calcium & Magnesium: Strong stems need ample calcium to support heavy bud weight as flowers fill out over the coming weeks. I am a firm believer in using a Cal-Mag supplement.

Preparing for Fall Mold and Weather Challenges

Late summer heat quickly turns into cool, damp fall mornings. Preventative action taken in August stops mold and pest infestations before they start:

1. Inspect for Caterpillars & Pests: Check young flower clusters closely for budworms or caterpillars, which burrow into stems and trigger premature bud rot.
2. Improve Air Circulation: Space out surrounding vegetation and prune overlapping fan leaves to ensure breezes pass freely through the canopy.
3. Plan Your Late-Season Timeline: If you live in an area with early fall rains or short autumn windows, planting fast-finishing autoflowers or mold-resistant strains ensures your harvest finishes clean before wet weather arrives. Having the ability to cover your plants to keep the rain off can be helpful as well.
