Don’t Give Up on Your Cannabis Runt: Here’s Why

If you have many cannabis grows under your belt, then you have experienced a cannabis runt in your garden. They are not the norm, but they are not rare either. Are cannabis runts worth saving? Well that all depends on a few things….

So, you have a cannabis runt…now what should to do? Cull or keep?

What Causes a Cannabis Runt? Stunted Weed Plants Explained

Pretty much all plants can produce runts, and cannabis is no exception. Runts happen!

But, why do runts happen?

There are many reasons a cannabis plant can be subpar…or a runt.

It can be genetic, but that is not even the most common reason in my experience. If I am doing a seed run I will generally cull any subpar plants…the reason being I do not want to take the chance that genetics is the cause. I want no weakness in the genetic material.

I think a more common reason is the plant has had a bad childhood, whether it is severe transplant shock, lack of water, too much water, a root problem, a nutrient uptake problem (lack of nutrients, poor PH, ect) lack of sunlight, ect. again runts can happen.

How This Cannabis Runt Rebounded, Survived, and Even Thrives

This is the cannabis runt from the Hugelkultur Super Soil Cannabis Grow I got going up at Stony Oasis Farms. It is a Balochistan Black Tiger strain…which sadly I have run out of.

The plant, although small, looked as healthy as could be…dark green leaves, and just a pretty plant. And, there was plenty of time to cull if if that is what I decided to do.

So I let it grow on, and even babied it a bit…making sure it had plenty of water. Runts have always found a soft spot in my heart…and this one was no exception…I really wanted the little plant to make it!

The featured image above is the plant in the middle of July…it has basically made a full recovery and is not the smallest plant in the grow anymore….and is becoming impressive!

Sometimes runts while not growing much that you can see, are developing a serious root system, and in time will…’takeoff!’ Sometimes they had a hard start in life, but with a little nurturing, they can make a full come back.

Cannabis Runts…To Cull, or Not To Cull?

So to answer the question…sometimes it is best to cull the plant. Some runts will remain runts, and never amount to much.

But try to give it some time…see if it has it in it to recover. Once in a while the runt becomes your best plant!
