Breeding Tough Cannabis Plants Without Stakes or Support

Growing Outdoor Cannabis Plants With no Support

Walk into most commercial grow rooms or manicured backyards, and you will see cannabis plants tied up like circus tents. They are wrapped in plastic netting, held up by bamboo stakes, and coddled from the day they sprout. If a plant can’t even hold up its own weight under a light breeze, it doesn’t belong in a serious outdoor garden.

I pride myself in having genetics that can ‘take it’, can take what nature throws at them. And if they don’t…hehe, well there is always electricians tape! I did however use a wattle fence in the image above…this was to keep the wind from being able to get under the plant…moving the entire plant a bit too much. There have been 40+ MPH wind gusts at Stony Oasis Farms this spring!

If you want to breed true, tough survivors, you have to let nature do the testing for you….as I am doing as we speak…read about that garden here…Can You Grow 10lb Cannabis Plants in the Mountains? My Dryland Hugelkultur Experiment.

When you grow cannabis entirely unsupported against the elements, you quickly find out which genetics can hold up. A truly hardy strain develops thick, woody stalks and a massive, deep root system right from the start. It responds to high winds by growing stronger, not by breaking. It learns to adapt to the natural environment instead of relying on artificial crutches to survive.

To build these genetics, stop staking your outdoor starts. Let the wind move them. This movement triggers the plant to release growth hormones that thicken the cell walls in the main stem. If a phenotype flops over or breaks under a standard summer storm, that is a disqualifier. You don’t want to collect seeds from a weak plant, because those weak traits will just carry over to the next generation.

By selecting only the absolute toughest winners—the ones that stand straight and proud through heat, wind, and heavy heavy buds without a single stick of bamboo—you ensure your seeds are packed with real-world survivors. It makes your job easier, and it gives growers a plant that can actually handle the real world.
