Choosing the Best Male Cannabis Plant

Beautiful male cannabis plant...BadAss BB's.

What to look for In a Male Cannabis Plant for Breeding

My off grid hugelkultur cannabis grow will be a seed run, just as happens in nature. This is the way I love to produce seed. They will be F1’s, and I will likely never grow out an F2. F2’s will come if I find a cross that is just special for some reason…such as the F2 I have made called Purple Lemonade…can make the prettiest flowers!

Choosing the best male cannabis plant is not rocket science.

Here is what I look for when choosing a male cannabis plant for breeding…

  • Vigor and Growth Rate…Choose a male that grows vigorously, and gets tall. A good male will tower over the female plants as cannabis is wind pollinated, and tall males are more successful.
  • Structural Integrity…Choose a plant that is strong and robust, and has thick strong stems, can hold it’s own in the wind.
  • Aroma…Yes certain males can have a cannabis smell to them, ( and some can even have trichomes!)I think this is a very desirable trait to have. Everyone loves those stinky females!
  • Disease and Pest Resistance…again choose only the strongest males…no weak diseased or pest covered plants. Strong cannabis plants can withstand disease and pests.
  • Flower Density…I like full fat flower spikes on males. Here is an image of an amazing male dubbed Sir Wild Thing

I was going to have a contest and have you guys pick the male for this run. But after taking a look at all the plants I found I have 3 males (I literally think about all the rest are female) and who would have thunk it…they are all 3 BadAss BBs plants.

One is a tall Indica type male you can see in the image above and again here…

If I was going to pick just one male plant to have his way with the ladies it would be him.

He is tall, vigorous, and the comment Christmas tree shape, which is the strongest structurally IMO.

I have decided however to keep all 3 male BadAss BB plants instead. This will give more pheno types, and more genetic diversity for the F1’s.

So he is at one end of the row of plants in the dryland hugelkultur bed, and then scattered down the row are two more BadAss BB males…and here they are…

Bad Ass BB’s is a strain I carry that was first produced by my master grower brother down in Oregon. All his plants are fire! They will make awesome Papa’s.

Conclusion

Well what do you think….did I make a good choice? Do you like the look of these males? I would love to hear your take….even if it is critical. I am not going for the next ‘Big Thing’ in the cannabis world (the hope of most cannabis breeders) I am just wanting to produce tough, potent, forgiving, cannabis plants. Plants that will get big, plants that will impress, plants that will produce!
