Wind Rocking Your Weed? Fix Loose Cannabis Stems in Soil

Is the wind loosening your cannabis plants?

Protecting Your Outdoor Grow: What to Do When Wind Loosens Your Cannabis Plant

The wind at Stony Oasis Farms can be brutal….especially in the spring and early summer! And this year, 2026 i9s no exception. As a matter of fact the winds have been especially brutal this year with the cannabis plants having to deal with 30-40 mph gusts. This wind if it gets it’s way and loosens the entire plant can cause root flare exposure. The plant is losing it earth anchor.

Pile fresh soil around the cannabis plants main stem.

Wind vs. Weed: Stabilizing Loose Main Stems

You can see the plant pictured above is laying on it’s side, with a funnel shaped hole around the main stem from it wallowing around. This is classic outdoor cannabis wind damage, and this movement is very hard on the plant and can loosen it’s roots grip on the ground. Without intervention the plant will have a rough go of it throughout it’s life.

What to do?

First off you will need to put a nice pile of fresh soil around the wind wallowed main stem. Ideally you want to fill the entire wallowed out hole with fresh soil, and pack it a bit right around that main stem.

The cannabis plant can actually grow more roots right out of that main stem, and if that happens the plant will become very stable, and can then withstand even more thrashing around in high winds.

Stabilize the cannabis plants with rocks.

I carefully fill the entire hole the wind has caused the stem to make, standing the plant up straight again in the process.

I like to use a fine soil, devoid of any rocks to stabilize the plants stem.

Stabilize newly planted fruit trees with rocks around the trunk.

You can stake the plant well, and this can work well, but for this grow I have decided to not stake or net any of these plants…concentrating on how robust my genetics are, how they will grow well in less then ideal conditions.

Once I carefully pack the new soil firmly around the base of the wind worried plant, I place several support rocks as the final step in stabilizing the plant in those severe mountain winds that are so common there in the foothills of the Simcoe mountains.

I have used that same technique to stabilize the 26 fruit trees I have just planted. This technique works well, but one must be careful not to bruise or damage the plant when you pile the rocks around it’s base.

Using a Wind Break (Wattle Fence) to Help Wind Rocked Cannabis Plants

I will also be installing a wind break to help my cannabis plants hold up to those gusty mountain winds. Again I could stake, or add netting, both of which would help stabilize the plants…But I am going for even more natural solutions here.

So I will be building a DYI wattle fence to place near the plants on their southern windward side.

Wattle fence to protect plants from wind.

I will build it so it is only a few feet tall, as it is on the southern side and I do not want it blocking much sunlight from my plants. I will also be using metal T posts because of the ease with which I can get them installed.

As long as the bottom of the plants are out of that strong wind, they should be able to remain well rooted. The top of the plants will only get stronger when whipped around in those winds.

Worst case scenario….I will stake the plants if need be…I will see how it goes. Growing cannabis plants outdoors requires one to be adaptive, and responsive to problems that may develop.

Next trip up I will build my wattle fence and do an updated article…so stay tuned for that.
