In my 50+ years of growing our favorite plant I have grown my share of monsters. I once had a grow, and the plants were huge…so I brought a measuring tape and measured them….over 15 feet tall, and buds the size of my arm!

The Secret to Multi-Pound Harvests

Every outdoor grower dreams of harvesting true tree-sized cannabis plants loaded with heavy colas. While breeders often market strains growing 10 pound plants, hitting massive yields isn’t down to luck or bottled synthetic boosters alone.

It comes down to a simple botanical principle: the size of the root zone directly dictates the size of the canopy. If you give a plant unrestricted space, rich living biology, and intense sun, vigorous genetics will reward you with massive yields….pretty much.

3 Pillars for Growing Massive Outdoor Cannabis

• 1. Deep Soil Preparation & Trenching: Confining a vigorous plant to a small pot restricts lateral root expansion. Excavating deep planting trenches, hügelkultur beds, or 100+ gallon smart pots filled with organic living super soil allows taproots and feeder roots to run deep and wide, easily withstanding summer heat.
• 2. Soil Biology and Biochar: Incorporating well-aged compost, biochar, and mycorrhizal fungi creates an expansive underground microbial network. This web breaks down natural amendments (like kelp, bone meal, and worm castings) and feeds the plant on demand without burning delicate root hairs.
• 3. Structural Support and Early Training: Giant plants require a heavy-duty backbone. Top early in vegetative growth to establish multiple main stems, and install double or triple trellis netting or tomato cages early. When late summer colas pack on resin, physical support prevents heavy branches from snapping under their own weight. I may have made a mistake of not supporting this years grow enough…50 years of growing cannabis and I am still learning. ;o)

I have many strains that fit the bill…with my favorites being Sugar Haze, BadAss BB’s, KickAss White OG, Purple Lemonade (this one is a stand out!), Blackberry Gold XXL, and Lebanese Gold to name a few.

For small-space or rapid indoor turnarounds, selecting heavy-branching, highest yielding autoflower indoor stock gives you fast canopy fill without the massive outdoor footprint.

Feed the Soil, Reap the Reward

When you shift your focus from force-feeding the plant to cultivating an expansive, healthy root ecosystem in rich soil, giant 10-foot canopies and monster harvests take care of themselves. I have seen this first hand this year…normally I will feed my cannabis plants about every time I water them…but this year with the super soil and hugelkultur bed I realized they def needed no additional food…just water.
