Growing Cannabis in Triple Digit Heat

How to Grow Cannabis When it is HOT!
Can you grow an outdoor cannabis plant when it is really, really hot? The short answer is…yes, yes you can.
I have been growing cannabis for over 50 years, and in that time I have never seen a properly hydrated cannabis plant have any issue with extreme heat.
Cannabis is a sun loving plant, and some may disagree, but I think cannabis is a heat loving plant as well.
Santa Marta Colombia Gold Seed Grow

I did an outdoor grow of Santa Marta Gold, and the plants got BIG (12-13 foot tall) especially when one realizes they were all grown in 5 gal buckets. I grew the 15 plants I am able to grow that summer….I think it was 2024.
I just made a comment on SM about this grow…the post showed plants growing in pots that were maybe 6 feet tall…the poster bragged about how big he could grow cannabis plants in pots. I shared this grow, and he says no, my plants had roots growing down in the ground from the buckets. But that was not the case….I not only moved these plants around, but purposely drilled my drain holes a couple inches up from the bottom of the bucket….this was to create a space for a bit of a water reservoir in the bottom of the buckets.

I had to top the plants several times, as well as some super cropping to try to keep them below the fence….that was hard to do.
I like to keep the under story of plants like these cleaned up so there is good air flow.
Triple Digit Heat
That summer we had triple digit heat for 30 straight days. And, these plants had full southern exposure so when the sun was shining, it was shining on them…simply no respite for the heat all all.
In the height of the heat…and here in Kennewick WA it can and does get over 110 degrees regularly, I had to water these plants 3 times every day. I never let them wilt, always was johnny on the spot with some water for them.
They THRIVED as you can see. They loved the sun, and they loved the heat!
So…if you are growing cannabis and it gets hot in your garden…no worries, just make sure you hydrate your cannabis plants as often as they need it. And be aware they will love all the sun they can get, and they will survive all the heat they may be exposed to.
